Many publicity “experts” feel that the Internet is just another outlet to send information to, it doesn’t work that way. The Internet has its own rules. The Studios, for example, have the money to buy ads and muscle in that way. But most people don’t have that clout (nor money) and need the sophistication and the relationships or friends of true Internet professional to get meaningful results. Free or inexpensively.

Van Houten (Marketing and Publicity) has over 25 years experience as a marketing and publicity expert. His background includes Vice President of International Marketing at Paramount Pictures, Vice President of Corporate Communications at Trimark Pictures, in addition to being a production consultant to Warner Brothers’ “The Dukes of Hazzard: The Beginning,” Sony’s “The Lodger,” “Felon,” “Anaconda 3&4,” “The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day,” “Universal Soldier: A New Beginning,” among others. Tips from David E Van Houten

Tip 1. Have two biographies of yourself: One that is shorter, one or two paragraphs: the second, a longer fuller history, one page. Keep them businesslike. A lot of information that you’d like to include, such as your philosophy on life or what kind of person you are, readers usually don’t care about.

Tip 2. Make sure you update your IMDB.com profile. Make sure to have your photos and bio there.

Tip 3.It seems simple, but always proceed with a publicity or marketing plan. If you are in preproduction on a film, think about what you can do to groom your project’s awareness even during shooting (for consumers, potential distributors or festivals). Think about putting clips up during production or announcing start of production, especially on appropriate internet outlets.

Tip 4.The publicity world has changed, most people still don’t get online publicity and promotions. There are tons of things you can achieve, for little or no money.

Tip 5.A big problem is that we live in a results oriented world, many waste a lot of money chasing after a quick segment, just to say they are on TV or Radio. These one-offs are meaningless and usually do more harm than good.

New Tip! 6. Whether or not you use a publicity firm for yourself or a project, it’s essential to have someone for a “second opinion” and to make sure everything is being thought of on your behalf. Like getting a second opinion when you go to a doctor.

Written and originally posted October 12th, 2005

I really want to vent, but I realize that I have to understand that some people either get confused, or simply don’t “GET IT” when it comes to getting something for free. Is it REALLY free? Think about it. SOMEONE is paying for it to become available to you for “FREE” somehow!

Let’s look at newspapers or magazines that you receive for “FREE.” These publications are supported by advertising that is built around the content. The more advertising dollars the publications gain, the more they can grow. Some publications will charge you AND place advertising around their content. So, you should feel lucky that SOMEONE is paying for you to get the “FREE” version, which isn’t really free because they are “BUYING” space for your eyeballs to see their products or services. Same with television.

Now, why would I vent about this? Perhaps it is because I offer free printables on a website that is built upon the same premise. Chart Jungle has printable charts, schedules, checklists, etc. available for free. Let me tell you, it isn’t free for me to run the site and it isn’t free for me to send out a newsletter to let my subscribers know that there are more free printables, articles, etc. available. Every time that someone loads each printable image, my bandwidth gets used and the price for it is paid for by me. I use a third party host to send out my newsletter and they charge me too.

To offset the costs that I have to pay each month, I build advertising around the content areas, just like I mentioned the newspapers and magazines do. I get TONS of nice letters from thankful individuals and families each month. However, I get a few of the selfish and mean messages too, which I don’t understand. For heaven’s sake, these printables are free!

I received messages like:

” I don’t want the advertising, I just want the free printables ”

” I feel like I was duped into signing up for what I thought were charts and helpful tips and stuff. What I got from your site is advertisements ”

” Remove me from your “Club”. I joined by lure of “free printables”. However, it’s a scam like everything else. You should be ashamed of yourselves luring in desperate parents. ”

Hmmm… wow. A scam, they were duped, they don’t want advertising. Those types of messages make me think about charging subscribers a monthly cost and remove the advertising. However, that wouldn’t be fair to the parents who can’t afford it and really rely on the charts that I provide. I use these charts myself, and found that sharing them helped others.

So, maybe they just misunderstand, or got confused. I am not sure. But, one thing is for sure… NOTHING is REALLY free. SOMEONE is paying for it and for a reason.

I am sure that my fellow friends in the media online and offline understand this view.

Tens of thousands of page views per day and the fact that you get emails like this infrequently sends a clear message to me that 99.9% of your following loves what your doing for them. There’s always going to be an occasional whiney baby so don’t take it to heart dear. I know you’re a perfectionist and you want to make everyone happy but you always are going to have at least one knuckle-head out of ten thousand!

Wendy,
Sorry that you are frustrated and dealing with this right now. Hopefully, your readers will realize that advertising is better than being charged for your content. The free printables are a bonus and they should be thankful you offer that. You are not giving them worms or trojan horses just advertising. What’s the harm in that? If they don’t want to buy the product they don’t have to. It’s a choice. I hope you are able to continue providing interesting content and points of view to your readers. Some ethos for you: I work for The Palm Beach Post so I totally understand the situation.-Ken

Hi Wendy,

Some people are really thick arent they???? I love your sight and have been a subscriber for years and I for one love the different things that you offer on your sight I have never thought it was to much I love your sight for what if is and what it offers isnt that the purpose of going to a websight???
The printables are great and so helpful and your right alot of homeschool families dont have alot of money so your sight is a real blessing for them as well. If the others dont like the way your doing things they can make there own charts or just get the charts they want and make copies and dont bother coming back it they dont want to be bothered!!! Another idea I know your real busy but maybe you could make a CD of your main helpful charts and sell them for a set price and the complainers can get their charts that way and you could make some extra money as well…I am also a stay at home homeschooling Mom and maybe I could be of some assistance?? I love your sight and would hate to loose it because some people dont understand the concept of free stuff..Know what I mean?? You and Mike have some awesome sights keep up the good work and dont let a few bad apples ruin the whole basket for the ones who really appreciate all you do and all your hard work. Your the best and so is your sights…. :>) Have a good one Stephanie

Hi Wendy

I was thinking what Mike said.

You already seem to have a working forumla (for your visitors and for yourself). I hope you don’t stress on the few who write in negatively.

#5 2005-10-16 @ 1:10:32 am From: Joni Pipkin

Hi Wendy!
Have loved your site for a long time now and could really relate to your frustration. As an online entreprenuer, I have come to believe that there is a weird little group of aliens that get paid big bucks to harass all the rest of us and make us feel as low as possible~ maybe so we quit and they can take over the whole cyber space universe for themselves! Anyway~ I say “Keep up the good work” and don’t let the little depressed cyber-whiners get to ya~

There is no schedule that I go by. Housework suffers many times. I am thankful to have a wonderful husband who understands and helps around the house. My children are also helpful about the chore requirements when they want to be. I feel truly blessed.

I realize that what I do isn’t for everyone. If you have some of the following attributes, you may be able to…

1. Multitask. You must be able to do more than one thing at a time. Or do one thing while planning out another task that you have to do.

2. Fast. You must be fast at the things you do. I am not talking about everything, just the things you are good at or like to do.

3. Interruptions. You need to be able to deal with interruptions on a constant basis. Many things will break your train of thought, the phone, the kids, the hubby, the dog, chores, errands, etc.

4. Entrepreneur. You need to have something of interest that you are obsessed with. You need to learn new things every day. You need to network with people in your field. You may find that you can’t stop new ideas from popping up in your head.

5. Homeschool. You need to have lots of patience and time. Learn the various ways of home schooling and research all the topics at every grade level to see what is needed. Tune into your kids to find their interests. Learn with them and learn from them.

6. Housework. You need to know that you can’t do everything by yourself all of the time. Encourage your family to help. Everyone makes the messes, everyone can help clean the messes.

7. Love. If your life is in turmoil, it will be hard to do much of anything. You need lots of love and support. You need people who believe in you.

8. Balance. Learn to take a break. Soak a long time in a bubble bath. Read a book for pleasure. Take a nap. Watch some movies. Take a walk. Visit with a friend. Go shopping, but watch your budget.

A website owner is always concerned about bandwidth. Website hosting packages will do one of two things once you go over the allotted bandwidth for your account.

- The host will make your website inaccessible until you pay the overage amount, or until you pay to increase your hosting bandwidth space.

- The host will continue to let your bandwidth go over the allotted amount and charge you overage fees at the end of the month.

What are the bandwidth monsters?…

1) Traffic to your website. Visitors to your website use bandwidth by opening up the html pages and images on those pages.

2) Images on your website. Images come in many sizes and dimensions. Make sure that you compress images as small as you can in KB without losing too much quality.

3) Image leeching. Sometimes other websites will link to your images. This is especially true with websites that have wallpapers, or popular images. Instead of the website saving the image to their host, they include the image in their website with a link to the image on your host. Check to see if your host offers “Leech Protection”. If the host doesn’t, then you can change your image now and then and have the old image become an advertisement for your website. The website doing the image leeching won’t like this.

4) Size of html files. Web pages with a lot of text will add to the size of the html file. Each time the web page is loaded, your visitors are using some of the bandwidth allotted.

5) Audio, Video, and Flash. Audio, video, and flash files are generally pretty large in kb size. If every web page has flash on it, that file is loaded, using bandwidth. This is the same for each time a visitor clicks on the link for the audio/video files.

6) Incoming and outgoing email. File attachments, and message sizes contribute to your bandwidth use. Yes, even spam uses bandwidth!

7) FTP uploading. Some hosts will count your FTP uploading of images, videos, audios, flash, and html files as bandwidth usage.

Backend images. You may not be aware of it, but if you have a fancy looking backend, such as a membership system, or mailing system, with lots of images, you are using your own bandwidth when trying to take care of administration details.

9) Syndicate content. Some websites offer for the content to be syndicated. Each time you update your website with new content, other websites that have a certain code on their site, will draw the content changes automatically from your website. This uses bandwidth also.

Data transfer of any kind from yourself, your visitors, and other websites contribute to your bandwidth usage. Most hosts have an area for you to log in and check to see how much you have used in any given month.

Make sure that you know what your host does when you have gone over your bandwidth allotment.

- Does your site disappear until the next month starts? OR do you just accrue overage fees?

- Check to see if your host will warn you right before your account goes over the bandwidth allowance for your package.

- Check to see what the fees are for going over your bandwidth.

Keep track of those bandwidth monsters! And contact me if you need website services. If you are looking for a good website host, go with one I’ve used for many years – click here
