Philanthropist Frances Hayward Launches 'Amigo The Potcake' Website
New Site Aims to Educate Children on the Importance of Kindness to Animals
LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - July 22, 2010) - Philanthropist and animal rights activist Frances Hayward extends her cause to include the launch of a multi-media entertainment project centered on canine character "Amigo The Potcake." The comprehensive development includes a new playful website for children, http://www.AmigoThePotcake.com, that teaches the significance of being kind to animals.
Amigo's character is based on a real-life "potcake" (Bahamian native dog) who was rescued by Hayward in the Bahamas and soon became a hero and superstar in the Islands. The term "potcake" refers to the "cakes" they were fed -- the hard crunchy bottom of a pot of peas and rice, a common local dish. Potcakes first arrived as the companion animals of the original settlers during the Revolutionary War. Through the years, they bred to form a unique breed of their own.
Amigo's pioneering and adventurous spirit inspired an entire movement of animal welfare initiatives in the Bahamas and abroad. He soon became the "spokesdog" of BEKiND (www.bekind.org), a nonprofit organization that partnered with The Humane Society of the United Sates to promote awareness and sympathy for the plight of animals, and to help alleviate animal suffering worldwide.
Inspired by the impact Amigo made as a rescued animal, a group of writers and artists joined to advance Amigo's cause by launching a multi-media venture centered on 'Amigo The Potcake' as a cartoon character. Hayward's goal for the new endeavor is to gently present the realities of irresponsible treatment of animals through simple, contemporary stories that inspire parents and children to get involved in the fight for kindness and humane treatment of animals worldwide.
Geared for children of all ages, the new Amigo The Potcake website features interactive content, including make-your-own-adventure e-books that depict Amigo on daring expeditions as he rescues his friends from the same perils that animals face today. A fun and educational music video and a sing-a-long page can also be found on the site. In the coming months, plans for Amigo The Potcake include children's books, a TV series, and a possible animated film.
